What you'll be doing
The Assistant in Nursing works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse, supports the nursing team in the delivery of person-centered care in collaboration with individual/s and the multidisciplinary health care team to achieve people focused quality care.
Selection Criteria
- Current Health Service Assistant Certificate III (Aged Care) or equivalent, or having recent equivalent experience or have completed 1 or more year’s training as an undergraduate nursing student.
- Demonstrated understanding of delegation and ability to work within a plan of care under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse.
- Demonstrated ability to provide person-centered care in a manner that respects the rights of individuals and groups in the context of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. through the use of information technology, written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated capacity to identify and resolve conflict situations by managing own emotional responses and interacting with others in a personable and professional manner.
- Evidence of participation in personal development and commitment to maintaining competence and enhancement of skills.

Garrawarra Centre is a 104 bed Dementia Specific Residential Aged Care Facility located in the tranquil setting of Garrawarra State Conservation Area, Waterfall. The Centre is one of the few purpose-built, dementia specific facilities in New South Wales.
There is ample, free on-site parking but you will need your own reliable transport as Garrawarra is not accessible by any public transport.

An exciting opportunity to join South Eastern Sydney Local Health District and earn an income while you gain a qualification!
We are offering an exciting and unique opportunity in 2027 to complete a nationally recognised Certificate III in Health Services Assistance while working as a Trainee Assistant in Nursing. The positions are 13 month temporary full-time positions, working a rotating 24hr, 7 day a week roster. The Theoretical component is conducted by TAFE NSW and trainees are paid to attend class. The program will commence on Monday 8 February 2027.
Garrawarra Centre will appeal to Individuals who have a particular interest in working within the complex specialty of Dementia and who are committed to person-centred care. Garrawarra Centre thrives on providing quality, person-centred care for elderly people who have a primary diagnosis of Dementia and associated behaviours. We endeavour to maintain a home-like appearance and atmosphere. We work closely with experts in the field such as Geriatricians and Clinical Nurse Specialists to ensure a high level of care is provided.
Please do NOT apply if you already have a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Descriptor: Assisting in Nursing Work in Acute Care) or equivalent, you will be ineligible. This is a traineeship to complete the qualification.
All staff are expected to act as an appropriate and effective role model and promote culture and supporting practices that reflect the NSW Health CORE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment through demonstrated behaviours and interactions with residents, clients and employees.
All staff are expected to take reasonable care that their actions do not adversely affect the health and safety of others, that they comply with any reasonable instruction that is given them and with any reasonable policies/procedures relating to health or safety in the workplace, as well as notifying any hazards/risks or incidents to their managers.

Contribute to collecting accurate health care information and maintaining accurate health care documentation as required
Communicate effectively with residents and other health care team members in accordance with appropriate protocol

What you will be doing:
This position is open to qualified Advanced trainees in Geriatrics to practice under the supervision and direction of Specialist Geriatricians to assess and medically manage a comprehensive range of illnesses and disorders related to aged care.
The SLHD Geriatric Medicine Advanced Training Network offers you a comprehensive and well established Geriatric Medicine Advanced Training Program, with experienced supervisors, a wide range of formal education programs, a track record and resources for the completion of substantive projects.
Our reputation is second to none with clinical rotations allocated according to your experience, interest and training needs. The final allocation would also take into account the service needs across the SLHD Geriatric Medicine network training sites.
There is opportunity for you to rotate through subspecialty training modules including orthogeriatrics, cognitive disorder clinics, surgical liaison service, psychogeriatrics, as well as a variety of community based Geriatric service initiatives.
The duration of the position is for one full year (twelve months), though many trainees would reapply in subsequent clinical years to continue their advanced training in the network to take full advantage of the training opportunities.
The SLHD Geriatric Medicine Training Network
All network rotation sites are part of the Sydney Local Health District. Sites for our Network rotations include: Concord Repatriation General Hospital, The Canterbury Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Balmain Aged Care Departments. All positions will participate in rotations allocated across the training network. Each rotation is approximately of 3 months duration.
The SLHD Geriatric Medicine Training Network encompasses the Aged Care departments and facilities of the Sydney Local Health District, covering the Sydney and Inner West Local Government Areas of Ashfield, Burwood, Canterbury, Canada Bay, Leichhardt, Marrickville, Strathfield, and part of the City of Sydney.
This training network is accredited for three years of Geriatric Medicine Advanced Training by the RACP Geriatric Specialist Training Committee in recognition of the training opportunities available.
Where you will be working:
You will be based at one of the SLHD hospitals for each rotation. SLHD hospitals include Concord Repatriation General Hospital, The Canterbury Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. All positions will participate in rotations allocated across the training network. If allocated to a community term you will experience outpatient care, community home visits, Residential Aged Care Outreach.

The St Vincent’s Geriatric Service covers a geographical area bounded by the City of Sydney and the localities covered by Woollahra and Waverley Councils, extending from the City and Redfern areas through to Bondi and Vaucluse.
The linked services as part of the training experience include the St Vincent’s Hospital Geriatric Unit and Medical

Position 2 Consultation and Orthogeriatrics Service. This role covers consultations to our service with a rotating
consultant involvement. There is a strong focus on Orthogeriatrics and the development of similar surgical
geriatric services is in progress.
Position 3 SVH Community Advanced Trainee – involved in case conferencing rounds hospital wide, recruitment
and management of patients in HITH, medical liaison with TACP and Community services, domiciliary visits and
the development of outreach into Residential Aged Care Facilities.
Position 4 WMH Community Geriatric Flying Squad Advanced Trainee, assessing patients in the community for
acute and subacute geriatric issues, working also in RACF outreach, clinics and rehabilitation at War Memorial
Hospital.
Position 5 Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital - This position will have both clinical and academic components. It will expose the
person appointed to the challenges and the rewards of working in both a busy city hospital as well as in parts of
rural regional Australia.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide safe, respectful and compassionate care to residents within your scope of practice.
- Work collaboratively with Registered Nurses and other members of the healthcare team.
- Support residents with their daily care needs and promote their dignity, independence and wellbeing.
- Communicate respectfully and professionally with residents, families, carers and colleagues.
- Maintain accurate documentation in patient records to meet legislative requirements.
About You
We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate health professional who is committed to providing the best possible care to our residents and support to their families and carers. You will be friendly, polite and courteous, with a genuine interest in working with older people and people requiring palliative care.
Previous experience in aged care will be highly regarded.
Essential Requirements
- Certificate III in Assistant in Nursing; or
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate Registered Nursing degree, having completed first year and the first semester or trimester of second year; or
- Currently enrolled in a TAFE NSW Diploma of Nursing, having completed the identified foundational units in practice and 80 hours of clinical placement.
